Academy 1/144 scale P-8A Poseidon plastic model kit review

Built to replace the venerable P-3 Orion in the maritime reconnaissance role, the Boeing P-8 Poseidon entered U.S Navy service in 2013. Based on the 737-800, it is also operated by the air arms of Australia, the United Kingdom, Norway, and New Zealand and has been ordered by South Korea, Canada, and Germany. While there have been Poseidons in 1/72 and 1/200 scale before, the Academy 1/144 scale P-8A Poseidon plastic model kit is the first in the “standard” airliner scale.
Replicating box art paint scheme and weathering

The multi-color, pre-World War II scheme on Takom’s 1/35 scale Skoda PA 2 Turtle is depicted beautifully on the box art, which inspired me to replicate it on the model. This build was all about the finish, so I built the model straight out of the box. The first step in finishing the armored vehicle was overall dark gray primer. Using mixes of Tamiya Neutral Grey (No. XF-53) and Flat White (No. XF-2), I painted panels and highlights to obtain the proper preshading and light mapping.

One quite different from the bubble canopied P-51D that comes to mind when someone says Mustang. Between NAA’s original Allison-engined, low-level wonder and the superior, six-gunned escort, the P-51B/C was the first Merlin-powered production Mustang.

Growing up, I shared a bedroom with my older brother. He had a Monogram 1/48 scale B-24J hanging from the ceiling. He took his model with him when he got his own room, so I built the same kit to replace it. Made with tube glue and corresponding fingerprints, that model is long gone. Forty-five years later, we have a newly-tooled kit of one of my favorite airplanes from HobbyBoss, a 1/48 scale B-24J Liberator plastic model kit.
Revell 1/25 scale Ford Bronco Half Cab plastic model kit review

Another fine offering from Revell, the 1/25 scale Ford Bronco Half Cab plastic model kit represents the pickup version of the first generation Bronco and features a V8 engine, full glass, and a rear-mounted spare. The instructions include a brief history, 47 illustrated steps, parts index, and paint suggestions. The detailed 302 V8 mounts to the separate chassis. Don’t attach the air cleaner yet because it could create a clearance issue when mounting the body.
Tamiya 1/24 scale Porsche 911 GT3 RS (992) plastic model kit review

There aren’t many cars that have defined the Porsche brand more than the Porsche 911. Although the GT3 RS (992) version is vastly different and much more capable than its predecessors, the basic design and styling of its roots are still evident. The rear-mounted flat-six engine now produces 525 HP. Extensive use of carbon fiber and lightweight design give the RS outstanding performance. Given its popularity, it’s unsurprising that the 911 has been well-represented in model kit form.
Tamiya 1/35 scale PzKpfw I Ausf B plastic model kit review

Molded in dark gray plastic, the all-new Tamiya 1/35 scale PzKpfw I Ausf B plastic model kit features excellent detail including link-and-length styrene tracks with molded sag. Decals are provided for three different vehicles: two from the 4th Panzer Division — one in Poland in 1939, the other from France, 1940 — and a third from an unknown unit in Russia in 1941. Also included is a partial — from the knees up — commander figure to pose in the main hatch.

Italeri has a reputation for being the first out with a kit of the latest aircraft. Indeed, it was first with a 1/72 scale kit of the X-35 experimental prototype of this “advanced fighter” way back in 2000. Since then, it has produced several kits in several scales of the “production” F-35 variants. Now we have the Italeri 1/72 scale F-35C Lightning II plastic model kit depicting the U.S. Navy’s aircraft carrier version.
