Every year, the Twin Cities Aero Historians, Minnesota Military Figure Society, RPM Model Club, and OMG Modelers partner to organize NordicCon. The event, which features both a scale model contest and exhibition, once again found a home at the Veterans’ Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, on Sept. 21, 2024. FineScale Modeler was there, and we had a heckuva time picking the models we wanted to show you.

Mac McKellar, Pontiac chief engine engineer, began his tenure in 1937 and retired in 1982. Mike Kollver built a 1/25 scale model of Mac’s experimental 1963 Grand Prix with a 421 OHC V8 under the hood. He used AMT ’64 Grand Prix and ’63 Bonneville kits to make this historically accurate replica. Pete Altwies modeled a 1/25 scale 1960 Ford ramp truck by kitbashing AMT kits and building the backend from Evergreen styrene products.

Terry Van Parys’ 1/25 scale 1965 Dodge Coronet AWB “Gold Rush” brandishes a resin body, many 3D-printed parts, and plenty of scratchbuilt equipment, including the roll cage, shocks, cross member, engine mounts, and oil pan. He painted the body with ScaleFinishes 1965 A Gold and ACME 2K Clear. One of Clyde Thrasher’s friends suffered a house fire and lost his 1964 ½ Mustang convertible.

The IPMS/USA National Convention and largest model show in North America occupied the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison, Wisconsin, for four days, July 17-20, 2024. Modelers from across the U.S. and Canada, as well as Argentina, Australia, the United Kingdom, and French Polynesia, gathered to spend money in the large vendor room, attend seminars, talk about techniques, catch up with friends, and, of course, show off their efforts in the contest room.
