Fire Chief
Fire Chief is a magazine that has been around since 1956. It focuses on topics that are especially relevant to fire department managers. Originally published in Chicago by Penton Media, it continued in that role until 2013. In 2014, the magazine was acquired by Praetorian Group. Notably, the issues from May 1968 to November 1991 were also numbered as whole numbers 134-415.

When I talk to firefighters about using inclusive language at work, they sometimes give me that look. “Oh, come on,” they’re saying, either explicitly or implicitly. “It’s just tradition. Calling someone a fireman is inclusive. Get over yourself.” I thought of these encounters after reading a column that used the word “brothers” throughout – no references to “sisters” or sisterhood.
