I was 10 years old the first time I swam in Lake Superior. It was August in 1988, and Minneapolis was sweltering. My dad reached his breaking point and booked the family a stay at a place along the North Shore near Silver Bay. We stayed in a little cottage right on the lake, and I remember running into the lake with my sisters and feeling the ice-cold water against my skin. After suffering for many days in our air condition-less Minneapolis home, the water was a shock but also a delight.
