Head for Points

Head for Points

Head for Points began as a personal project by Rob Burgess in 2012, driven by his wish to create a magazine filled with news and insights that actual business travelers in the UK would find valuable. Unlike typical business travel publications, which often cater to those in the travel industry, our focus is on real travelers and their needs. We aimed to offer a fresh perspective.

Two weeks ago, we told you that the 60 day block on booking Aer Lingus redemptions with Avios was back. It originally tried doing this in November 2023. Within two days of HfP writing about it, Aer Lingus had a change of heart and the cut-off was moved to six days. The same thing has now happened again – but this time the mea culpa isn’t quite as strong. During April, Aer Lingus put a 60 day block in place for Avios redemptions.

Airport lounge access card Priority Pass is not just about lounges. It also has deals with many airport restaurants where you can receive a free or discounted meal by showing your Priority Pass card. As I mentioned in our article on the Lloyds Bank World Elite Mastercard on Monday, which comes with a Priority Pass offering restaurant credits, I promised to update our list of participating UK airport restaurants. At any of these restaurants, you will receive £18 credit towards a meal or drinks.

World of Hyatt has launched a new ‘buy points’ offer. You will get a 20% bonus when you buy 5,000+ points via this link. The offer runs to 21st July. We value Hyatt points at 1.2p. At the top end you are paying $1,320 (£990) for 66,000 points, which is 1.5p each. We need to be frank here. This is the poorest ‘buy points’ offer that we’ve seen for a long time. The last one, which itself wasn’t the greatest, was for a 25% discount which is equivalent to a 33% bonus.

News in brief:On Saturday we ran an article on the decision by Emirates to block anyone without elite status (Silver or above) in Emirates Skywards from booking First Class redemptions. This was clearly a move to hold back First Class capacity for actual Emirates flyers rather than people transferring credit card points. Emirates gave less than 48 hours notice of the decision, which was poor.
