Houston Herald

Founded in 1878, the Houston Herald is a celebrated weekly newspaper that serves as the main publication for Texas County. In 2015, it received recognition as one of the best newspapers in its category during the Missouri Better Newspaper Contest. The Herald also produces a section called The Messenger, which is distributed to local homes that do not have a subscription to the newspaper.

    The Houston Rural Fire Department responded to a crash at about noon Thursday near the Hog Creek Bridge south of Houston. Authorities said the northbound lane of U.S. 63 is blocked. Motorists are asked to use caution in the area.

    A Houston man was injured Wednesday afternoon in a crash about one mile west of Raymondville on Highway B. Cpl. Jacob Sellars said an eastbound 1978 Jeep operated by a 60-year-old Raymondville man traveled off the left side of the road and overturned. A passenger, a 23-year-old Houston man, was taken with minor injuries by ambulance to Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. Both were wearing seat belts. The Jeep had moderate damage, Sellars said.

    Several activities are planned Friday evening in Houston. The annual kindergarten circus begins at 6 p.m. in Hiett Gymnasium. Students take the role of circus performers and animals. At 7 p.m. a “Meet and Greet” event is planned at the Lone Star Annex on Main Street. Speakers include Stasia Kelly, daughter of Emmett Kelly Sr., and Chris Berry, a member of the Circus Historical Society. It is sponsored by Houston Community Foundation.

    New identification requirements for travel go into effect May 7 in Missouri. The Missouri Department of Revenue encourages Missouri residents to verify their driver license or identification card is REAL ID compliant, before the deadline. The REAL ID Act was passed by the U.S. Congress in 2005 after the 9/11 Commission recommended the federal government set new standards for the issuance of identification to achieve enhanced security.

    Texas County ranked seventh in the state Thursday in the annual spring firearms turkey season, the Missouri Department of Conservation said. Hunters in the county had killed 264 birds. The breakdown is: 246 adult gobblers and 18 juvenile gobblers. Top counties in the state were:  Callaway (348), Gasconade (320), Franklin (318), Osage (308), Sainte Genevieve (285), Laclede (268), Texas (264) and Phelps (255).
