Houston Herald

Founded in 1878, the Houston Herald is a celebrated weekly newspaper that serves as the main publication for Texas County. In 2015, it received recognition as one of the best newspapers in its category during the Missouri Better Newspaper Contest. The Herald also produces a section called The Messenger, which is distributed to local homes that do not have a subscription to the newspaper.

The Houston Rural Fire Department responded to a crash at about noon Thursday near the Hog Creek Bridge south of Houston. Authorities said the northbound lane of U.S. 63 is blocked. Motorists are asked to use caution in the area.
Houston man injured in Raymondville accident

A Houston man was injured Wednesday afternoon in a crash about one mile west of Raymondville on Highway B. Cpl. Jacob Sellars said an eastbound 1978 Jeep operated by a 60-year-old Raymondville man traveled off the left side of the road and overturned. A passenger, a 23-year-old Houston man, was taken with minor injuries by ambulance to Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. Both were wearing seat belts. The Jeep had moderate damage, Sellars said.
Kindergarten circus, downtown activities planned Friday night

Several activities are planned Friday evening in Houston. The annual kindergarten circus begins at 6 p.m. in Hiett Gymnasium. Students take the role of circus performers and animals. At 7 p.m. a “Meet and Greet” event is planned at the Lone Star Annex on Main Street. Speakers include Stasia Kelly, daughter of Emmett Kelly Sr., and Chris Berry, a member of the Circus Historical Society. It is sponsored by Houston Community Foundation.
New ID law effective May 7 in Missouri

New identification requirements for travel go into effect May 7 in Missouri. The Missouri Department of Revenue encourages Missouri residents to verify their driver license or identification card is REAL ID compliant, before the deadline. The REAL ID Act was passed by the U.S. Congress in 2005 after the 9/11 Commission recommended the federal government set new standards for the issuance of identification to achieve enhanced security.
County listed seventh in spring firearms turkey season

Texas County ranked seventh in the state Thursday in the annual spring firearms turkey season, the Missouri Department of Conservation said. Hunters in the county had killed 264 birds. The breakdown is: 246 adult gobblers and 18 juvenile gobblers. Top counties in the state were: Callaway (348), Gasconade (320), Franklin (318), Osage (308), Sainte Genevieve (285), Laclede (268), Texas (264) and Phelps (255).
Accident leaves one with moderate injuries Wednesday, Troop G says

An accident east of Willow Spring on U.S. 60 injured a Tulsa man early Wednesday, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. Cpl. Mayela Baron said a westbound 2014 Acura MDX driven by the 72-year-old man traveled off the highway into the median and struck the ground. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken with moderate injuries to Ozarks Healthcare in West Plains following the 2:30 a.m. accident. The vehicle had extensive damage.
Entertainment planned for Emmett Kelly Festival

Houston will celebrate Saturday with the annual Emmett Kelly Clown Festival. From 9:30 to 11 a.m., Kirk Pierce will sing a variety of music that reflects his interest, from originals inspired by his roots in the Ozarks to covers by Cher and the Grateful Dead. Kirk is sure to perform something for everyone. After the 11 a.m. parade, the Clowns attending the Festival will perform skits on the stage and there will be an Emmett Kelly look-a-like youth contest.

Texas County ranked seventh in the state Wednesday in the annual spring firearms turkey season, the Missouri Department of Conservation said. Hunters in the county had killed 303 birds. The breakdown is: 278 adult gobblers and 25 juvenile gobblers. Top counties in the state were: Callaway (392), Gasconade (385), Osage (372), Franklin (364), Sainte Genevieve (318) and Miller (311).
Texas County accident claims one Tuesday

An accident Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of a Winona woman, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. Tpr. B.A. Swink said a northbound 2013 Mazda2 driven by the 78-year-old woman turned left on Route 17 into the path of a southbound 2020 GMC Yukon operated by a 65-year-old Summersville woman. Swink said the Yukon struck the Mazda. Texas County Coroner Brent Honeycutt declared the woman deceased at the scene. Next of kin has been notified. She was not wearing a seat belt.
Inmate dies at state prison at Licking

An inmate at the South Central Correctional Center died Monday evening, the Missouri Department of Corrections said. James Caraway, 81, was pronounced deceased at a medical unit at the prison in Licking. He was serving a 24-year sentence for two counts of possession of child pornography out of Howell County. He had been in prison since January 2019. Caraway died of apparent natural causes, authorities said.
