The Houston High School track and field teams continued the 2025 season Monday (April 14) at the Osage Warpath meet in Osage Beach. The big annual event included athletes from 22 schools. Osage doesn’t keep team scoring, and the top 4 finishers in each event received a medal. HHS junior Mason Dodson set a new school record in the javelin with a toss of 46.66m, beating the previous record of 45.51m by more than a meter.

After losing five consecutive games last week, the Houston High School softball team got back on the winning track in a home game on Tuesday at Carter Field, defeating a combined team from Dixon and Newburg, 15-5. The visiting combo squad got on the board first with 2 runs in the top of the first inning on 1 hit, 3 walks and an error.

In a South Central Association home match Tuesday against Liberty, the Houston High School tennis team went undefeated. Houston won all six singles matches and all three double matches, scoring shutouts in four matches and allowing only 1 point in three. No. 1 singles: Senior Connor McKinney won 8-1. No. 2 singles: Junior Kaleb McGiboney won 8-1. No. 3 singles: Junior Jack Sandberg won 8-4. No. 4 singles: Junior Maggie Wolfe won 8-0. No. 5 singles: Junior Riley Wilson won 8-5.

I don’t recall what case was the focus or even where I saw it, but I recently read an online article in which a defendant in a court procedure entered an “Alford plea.”Obviously, “guilty” or “innocent” are by far the most common pleas entered by defendants and attorneys in U.S. courts.

The Houston High School track and field teams competed last Thursday at the Mountaineer Relays at Mount Vernon, and the girls had a stellar showing. The Lady Tigers placed fourth in the 18-team meet, while the HHS boys came in 14th. Sophomore Adyson Dailing set a school record in the 300-meter hurdles (recording a time of 49.53 to top her own previous record of 49.87) and junior Kayla Wagner set a school record in the triple jump with a leap of 9.96 meters.
