1. IntroductionUnderstanding tissue oxygen content, especially the lack of oxygen, is key for assessing proper tissue function. Of special interest are tumors, which often grow with chaotic neo-vasculature, subsequently creating both chronic and transient hypoxia conditions.

1. IntroductionDrug development is currently arduous and costly.1,2 Therefore, rapid, cost-effective evaluation of drug candidates in translationally relevant in vitro model systems is highly desirable. Concurrently, tumor and patient heterogeneity present a difficult barrier to accurate drug efficacy determination. For this, patient-specific assays are currently under development. In vitro models with increasing translational relevance include spheroids, organoids, and excised primary tumor tissue.

1. IntroductionOptical imaging of transient events in their actual time of occurrence exerts compelling scientific significance and practical merits.1 Occurring in two-dimensional (2D) space and at femtosecond (1fs=10−15s) to microsecond (1μs=10−6s) time scales, these transient events reflect many important fundamental mechanisms in biology.2–4 However, many transient phenomena are either nonrepeatable or difficult to reproduce.

1. IntroductionIncorporating emerging technologies into the clinical workflow for the early staging of burn severity may provide a crucial inroad toward improved diagnostic accuracy and personalized treatment.1 Early knowledge of the severity of the burn gives the clinician the ability to discuss treatment options and prognostication for hospital stays, healing, and scarring.
