Local athletes wrap up State competition

Three high school athletes brought the spring sports season to a close in grand fashion, each competing in their respective sports’ state tournaments. Sophomore Joe Sampson competed at the state tennis tournament on June 5 and 6. He opened against Joshua Cook from Minnehaha Academy, the number two seed in Class A. After dropping a competitive opening set 4-6, Sampson was blanked 0-6 in the second; Cook would go on to finish third in the tournament.

Grasston may be seeing some relief soon from a residence within city limits that has a glut of tires on its property. At the same time, Kanabec County is grappling with what it should do with a tire pile on an acreage in tax forfeiture. A solution to at least one of these problems may be close at hand. Grasston Mayor Bill Tomczak told the Kanabec County Board of Commissioners during its public comment period that a residence within city limits had approximately 640 tires on its land.

A family-owned business in Mora is really on a roll. Mora Bakery — known for its friendly staff and delicious donuts — is the national winner for the northern region of the Dawn Foods National Donut Day contest. Representatives from Dawn, a Rogers-based food distribution center, visited the bakery on Friday, June 6 — National Donut Day — and presented Becky Ripka Matoga, owner with her sister Julie Ripka Drugatz, with the award.
Summer baseball - at a field near you

The Eastern Minnesota League’s regular season is in full swing, adding another summer of town baseball to its 100 year history. All three of Kanabec County’s league teams have put a tally in the win column, though all three are looking up at Princeton, who leads the North Division with a 4-0 league record. The Panthers have been dominant so far, outscoring opponents by an average of 13-2.

Things sound a little different these days over the local airwaves. That’s because Rockin’ Robin Riley, a fixture at KBEK radio off and on for close to 30 years, is no longer spinning tunes, writing news or interviewing guests. Earlier this spring, Riley unplugged her microphone and put away her headset. For her work in advocating for local groups, she will be honored this fall by Lakes & Pines Community Action with the Spirit of Community award.
Lions are tamed after three section wins

Ogilvie’s baseball team carried the momentum of a strong regular season into the postseason, reeling off three straight wins before ending with a third place finish in section play. An 11-6 record was enough to earn the Lions Section 5A-East’s number one seed, and with that seed came home field advantage through the bracket’s early rounds. Deegan Birkaker tossed a shutout against eighth-seed McGregor on May 22, then nearly did it again against fifth-seed Hill City/Northland on May 27.

Ava Halvorson has a busy summer ahead of her. She’ll be working at Welia Health during the week, and on weekends, she will be employed at Ogilvie Raceway and wash trucks at Besser Ag Services. For fun, the newly minted graduate of Ogilvie High School hopes to go to the lake, kayak and hang out with friends. First, though, she will compete in discus at the state track tournament on June 10.
Sapsuckers to host cider tasting event

For a second year, the Minnesota Cider Guild will hold its VIP Small Batch Cider Tasting. This year, the event is right in Kanabec County. The tasting, featuring cideries from all over Minnesota, will be from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 7, at Sapsucker Farms. According to local resident and Executive Director of the Minnesota Cider Guild Luke Stultz, the tasting will be set up like an open house “with each cidery having (its) own table or station to showcase what they make.
