KCSM-FM is operated by the San Mateo County Community College District and began broadcasting in 1964. Initially created as a training ground for student broadcasters, the station has evolved into a fully operational radio station with a professional team, while still providing valuable hands-on learning experiences for students in the Digital Media Department at the College of San Mateo. Situated in the San Francisco Bay Area, which ranks as the fifth largest radio market in the U.S., KCSM has the capacity to reach over 6 million listeners. Known as KCSM Jazz 91, the station broadcasts around the clock and has an expanding audience of more than 200,000 listeners. According to Arbitron, it ranks among the top 35 most popular non-commercial radio stations in the nation.* As an affiliate of Public Radio International and National Public Radio, KCSM stands out as the only station in the Bay Area dedicated entirely to jazz music. The programs feature a diverse lineup of hosts, including experienced jazz musicians, educators, and veteran broadcasters, often combining these roles into one.
