Kwong Wah Yit Poh

Kwong Wah Yit Poh

Kwong Wah Yit Poh, also known as Kwong Wah Daily, is a Chinese-language newspaper from Malaysia that was established on December 20, 1910, by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The concept for the newspaper, originally called Kwang Hwa Pao or 'Glorious Chinese Newspaper,' was first discussed during a visit to Penang in 1907 by Dr. Sun and his associates, including Hu Hanmin, Huang Xing, and Wang Jingwei. However, the initial plans faced challenges due to financial issues linked to a drop in tin prices. Later, the Yangon branch of the Tongmenghui took on the project and launched the Yan Kon Kwang Hwa Pao, but this publication was short-lived as it was banned by the British colonial authorities for its radical views. Following this, Zhuang Yin'an, the leader of the Rangoon Tongmenghui, traveled to Penang to help establish a committee aimed at reviving the Kwang Hwa Pao as a daily newspaper. The publication was renamed Kwong Wah Yit Poh and began its journey from 120 Armenian Street, which is now the location of the Penang Philomatic Union. The original site of the newspaper is currently preserved as the Sun Yat-sen Museum Penang. Kwong Wah Yit Poh holds the distinction of being the oldest Chinese-language newspaper in Malaysia, outside of China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and is recognized as one of the oldest continuously published Chinese newspapers in the world, with Ta Kung Pao being the oldest still in operation. However, it is important to note that it was not the first Chinese-language newspaper in Malaysia.
