    A LOCAL man has been honoured for his long service as a special police constable in Shetland. James Spence was given a special bar and rosette which marks the completion of 19 years of service. The 68-year-old, from Lerwick, was meant to be awarded it earlier this year in Inverness, but the flight south was affected by the weather. However Shetland area commander chief inspector Chris Sewell was on hand to do the honours at the Lerwick Police Station earlier this morning (Friday).

    AN ENGINE fire led to a Sumburgh to Glasgow Loganair flight having to divert to Aberdeen last year, an investigation into the incident has confirmed. The Loganair ATR 42-500 aircraft suffered a failure of one of its engines while cruising near Aberdeen after taking off from Sumburgh on 23 July, with a subsequent fire taking place inside its cowlings due to a leak from the fuel return line.

    EDUCATION chief Samantha Flaws has apologised “unreservedly” for the council’s lack of communication on its additional support needs (ASN) plans at Aith Junior High School.
