Limelight
Limelight is a classical music and arts magazine from Australia, located in Sydney. It started in January 1976 under the name ABC Radio 24 Hours, often referred to as 24 Hours. In June 2003, the magazine was rebranded and has been known as Limelight ever since.

There are moments in history that shake the foundations of society and whose effects continue long after. Such is the case with the murder of 21-year-old Matthew Shepard in Wyoming in 1998, a gay hate-crime that sparked an outpouring of public rage. Shepard, a gay university student, was taken one night to a country lane, tied to a fence, bashed unconscious and left alone. He was found the following day and died in hospital several days later without regaining consciousness.

The Song Company’s Songs from a Strange Land pays homage to the enduring brilliance of William Byrd while commemorating the quatercentenary of his death. The seven voices of the ensemble include Guest Director and tenor Christopher Watson, who curated this program of 11 songs stretching from the Renaissance to the present. Its title derives from the text of Psalm 137 (How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?), set by Byrd as a motet.

It is extremely rare for this writer to head for the merchandise stand after a concert and buy a CD, but rules were made to be broken and Nexas Quartet’s Tango de Saxos has been playing on a loop all day. The reason? Saturday night’s reunion of the Sydney-based saxophone quartet with bandoneon player Stephen Cuttriss and pianist Daniel Rojas, both of whom featured on the 2021 release.
