In Saturday’s first annual Todd Norman Memorial Game, Marblehead pitcher Tessa Francis allowed just five hits to go with a dozen strikeouts as the Magicians qualified for the Division 2 state tournament with a 5-1 win against Saugus. Ashley Mortensen, Kate Andriano, and Hailey Schmitt collected two hits apiece, while Luka Bornhorst roped a triple and Lyla McGovern a single that helped put three runs on the board. Taylor Deleidi pitched well for Saugus and collected a hit offensively.

Talk about personal bests. Marblehead’s track and field program was well-represented last week as the boys’ and girls’ teams competed in the Northeastern Conference Spring Invite. In point scoring, both Marblehead teams took down Saugus. Clark Roszell led the Magicians in high jump, clearing 5-8 for a personal-best leap. Noah Smerka was close behind with a 5-4 clearance, which tied his personal best from the winter season. Elise Burchfield won the long jump (16-4.5).

DANVERS — Despite some versatile offense from the St. John’s Prep lacrosse team – six players scored goals Saturday – the Eagles (9-1) met their match for the first time this spring. Staples (Westport, Conn.) came onto Glatz Field and left with a 12-6 victory over the defending Division 1 champions. Staples scored five first-quarter goals to put pressure on the hosts, who committed early turnovers and never found their offensive rhythm. There were some positives, however.

Marblehead’s boys lacrosse team (4-4) had itself a two-game week against Masconomet and Salem. The Magicians dropped one to the Chieftains — an overtime heartbreaker — but bounced back with a dominant performance against Salem. Masconomet squeezed out an 11-10 victory in Marblehead. Leading the Magicians were Will Sullivan (5 goals, assist), who continued his season-long tear, Reece Moore (2 goals, assist), and Tyler Forbes (goal, 2 assists). Colin Maniaci made 13 saves between the pipes.
