FOXBOROUGH — Controversial calls are part of the game. Sometimes, a call goes in your favor, and sometimes, it doesn’t. For the No. 11 St. Mary’s softball team, Thursday’s call went the other way during a 1-0 loss to No. 6 Foxborough in the Division 3 Round of 16. After giving up a home run to Foxborough’s Natalia Leach in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Spartans had a chance to respond in the next frame.

LYNN — When it’s not your day, it’s not your day — such was the case for No. 1 St. Mary’s, which fell to No. 16 Apponequet Regional, 8-3, Wednesday evening at Fraser Field. One big inning from the Lakers was the difference in the Division 3 showdown. Apponequet scored five runs in the fourth inning, flipping a 3-1 St. Mary’s lead into a 6-3 advantage. In the top of the fifth, with two men on, Apponequet lofted a pop fly into shallow left field near the foul line.

GLOUCESTER — The No. 24 Bishop Fenwick softball team traveled north to face No. 8 Gloucester in the Division 3 tournament. Despite winning its first two games (No. 41 Falmouth, No. 9 Hanover), the Crusaders bowed out in the Round of 16 after a 9-0 loss. You could say the storyline was Gloucester pitcher Abby Noble, who threw a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts. “She was lights out from the first pitch,” said Gloucester Coach Bryan Aiello.

You could call it a standout season for Peabody’s girls lacrosse team — one that included individual milestones and a share of the Northeastern Conference title. But it officially ended Friday, as the No. 16 Tanners lost to No. 17 Bishop Feehan, 11-9, on home turf. Despite an early exit from the Division 1 tournament, Peabody Coach Michelle Roach spoke highly of her seniors, who were freshmen when Roach took the job four years ago.

After meeting twice in Catholic Central League action, No. 9 Bishop Fenwick hosted No. 24 St. Mary’s in the Division 3 state tournament, with the Crusaders winning, 8-3, and advancing to the next round. Both teams got out to a strong start, with the score tied, 2-2, after the first quarter. Bishop Fenwick struck first when Kiley Bloom’s shot hit the back of the net. The Spartans scored the next two goals, as Shaye Denning went by multiple defenders before slotting home St. Mary’s opening goal.
