The offense was clicking and the pitching this early in the season was good enough for the Marion baseball team to win three of its four games it was able to play last week to snap a modest two-game losing streak by winning by an average score of 9-3 to up its record to 4-3, including 12-2 over Herrin Thursday.

Last year the Marion baseball team may or may not have overachieved posting its best record in over a decade and winning its first regional title since 2019 and despite losing seven seniors and one other key contributor the 2025 Wildcats returns several key players to make another run at a regional title and maybe their first sectional championship since 1964. “I’m really excited to see what this could be.” said Marion coach Kyle Geiger.

With the score tied and disappointment just 2:07 away the Marion boys basketball team dug deep and held off Mount Vernon to beat the Rams, 39-36, to win its first South Seven Conference championship since 1988 at Virgil “Cuss” Wilson Gymnasium before a capacity crowd from both schools Friday night. “Our kids knew it’s been 37 years,” said an emotional coach Gus Gillespie after the game.

After almost handing the South Seven Conference title to Mount Vernon with a double-overtime loss on the road, the Marion boys basketball team beat 25-win Centralia, 70-60, Friday night at Virgil “Cuss” Wilson Gymnasium before an almost packed house with many Orphans fans making the long trip down south. “Obviously, Tuesday night was heartbreaking with us being in control of the game being up by eight with four minutes to go, said Marion coach Gus Gillespie.

The Marion boys basketball team has hit its stride at the right time heading into the final three games of the regular season on an eight-game winning streak after beating Carbondale, 67-53, and Mt. Carmel, 68-25, last weekend before the hometown fans at Virgil “Cuss” Wilson Gymnasium. “We had a good win Friday night against Carbondale and today we came in and took care of business against Mount Carmel and now we have to look forward,” said Marion coach Gus Gillespie.
