On sunny afternoons at the Morgan Hill Community Garden, Charlie Beecroft tends to his plot of vegetables and herbs. After downsizing to a home in Morgan Hill with virtually no yard, the community garden has become his outdoor sanctuary. “For us, it was a great fit because we were downsizing from a quarter-acre (yard) in Redding to basically nothing here, and we really missed the idea of gardening,” said Beecroft, who joined the Morgan Hill Community Garden’s board of directors two years ago.

Local synagogue Congregation Emeth is launching an educational initiative in response to an incident where a Nazi flag was displayed on a highway overpass in Morgan Hill in March. Congregation Emeth is partnering with the Jewish Community Relations Council Bay Area (JCRC) and Advent Lutheran Church to present “HERE I AM: Understanding Jewish Identity and Antisemitism,” an interactive workshop scheduled for May 28 at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center.

The annual Morgan Hill Mushroom Festival is set to return May 24-25 at the Morgan Hill Downtown Amphitheater and surrounding area, bringing with it an enhanced focus on community involvement and educational scholarships while celebrating the region’s fungal heritage. The festival, which has been running since 1980, serves primarily as a fundraiser for high school senior scholarships and local nonprofit organizations.

In a move to expand educational opportunities for disadvantaged youth, Rebekah Children’s Services announced a new partnership with Gavilan College that will allow students in their Kneaded Culinary Academy to earn college credit and certification starting this fall. The three-way collaboration was unveiled during a community celebration May 8 at MOHI Ranch in downtown Morgan Hill.

Following a failed effort to protest the dissolution of the South Santa Clara County Fire District, county officials are preparing to consolidate fire protection services in unincorporated areas into the Santa Clara County Central Fire Protection District. Voters and property owners had an opportunity to protest the dissolution of the South County Fire District after the county’s Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) voted April 2 to do so.
