The New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung boasts a rich history as the first German newspaper in Texas. In 1957, the English-language publication, The Herald, combined with the German-language Zeitung to form a single entity. Together, they have been serving the community of New Braunfels and Comal County since 1852.

For the last two years, a group has been seen each Tuesday evening walking together in Landa Park to raise awareness for veterans’ mental health. New Braunfels resident and veteran Jeysson Gomez organizes the Tuesday Night Walks, the first of which was held on June 6 in 2023. Many participants carry flags or wear clothes designating their military branch or veteran organization.

This weekend, the Coll Street Players will be performing “Dear New Braunfels” — a short historical play highlighting real stories from the town’s history. In the play, two teenagers are cleaning up the storage room at the Sophienburg Museum when they open up a chest full of letters from historical figures, including Herman Seele, Ferdinand Lindheimer, the Landa family and Gruene family. As the teenagers read the letters, actors depict the described scenes.

A 2-year-old pit bull terrier named Gus has been waiting to be adopted at the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area (HSNBA) since his owner died in March. Comal County Animal Control brought Gus to HSNBA along with seven other dogs, said director of community engagement Zac Turley. The next of kin were unable to take the dogs, and after more than 10 weeks, Gus is the last one waiting at the shelter to be adopted.

CORPUS CHRISTI — For the first time in program history, Smithson Valley’s baseball team will play in a state championship game. The Rangers defeated Barbers Hill in the Class 5A-I state semifinals in a 2-0 sweep at Whataburger Field Friday afternoon. The team started the round with a 4-0 shutout on Thursday night before holding off the Eagles’ comeback attempt 4-3 in game two the next day.

American flags can be seen throughout New Braunfels’ Main Plaza and downtown streets on several patriotic holidays throughout the year, thanks to the efforts of the New Braunfels Lions Club. The downtown flag placement is a longtime New Braunfels tradition that has spanned several organizations. Lion Mike Stallings said the flag program originated with the American Legion Post 35.
