CORPUS CHRISTI — For the first time in program history, Smithson Valley’s baseball team will play in a state championship game. The Rangers defeated Barbers Hill in the Class 5A-I state semifinals in a 2-0 sweep at Whataburger Field Friday afternoon. The team started the round with a 4-0 shutout on Thursday night before holding off the Eagles’ comeback attempt 4-3 in game two the next day.

After falling short of the playoffs last season, New Braunfels’ softball team had a return to form in 2025. For their efforts, the Unicorns had 10 players receive postseason recognition from District 26-5A. Senior Izzy Cruz and Mikayla Wilson earned district superlatives. Cruz, a shortstop, was named the district’s Offensive Player of the Year while Wilson, a center fielder, was the Defensive Player of the Year. Cruz hit 20 home runs in her senior season.

BEEVILLE — Smithson Valley’s baseball team is on its way to its first state semifinals since 2021. The Rangers defeated La Joya Palmview in a three-game series 2-1 in the Region IV-5A-I final at Coastal Bend College on Saturday. After falling in a 7-0 shutout to the Lobos in game one Friday, the Rangers turned the tables in a doubleheader the following afternoon with an 8-2 win in game two and a poetic 7-0 shutout in a decisive game three.

WALLER — Smithson Valley’s softball storybook season ended in the final four of state playoffs Thursday. The Rangers fell short of a state final appearance, bowing out against the Barbers Hill Eagles in a 4-0 shutout in the Class 5A-I state semifinals at Waller High School. In a contest dominated by strong pitching, the Eagles had the hotter hand in the circle as Hailey Nutter threw a no-hitter with 18 strikeouts. Barbers Hill scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the third on four hits.

New Braunfels Christian Academy capped its track and field season at the TAPPS 4A state championship meet from May 1-3 in Waco. Their girls team placed fourth in the state while the boys finished 13th over the three-day meet. The Wildcats got podium finishes in three events. Sophomore Barrett Thornhill took gold in the boys pole vault with a personal record of 14-6. The girls 4x200 meter relay team of Charleigh Albergaria, Ellie Schwandt, Maren Joseph and Karley Kruger finished second (1:51.10).
