The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is a public research university located in Newark, New Jersey, and it also has a degree-granting campus in Jersey City. Established in 1881 with the help of local industrialists and inventors, including Edward Weston, NJIT began its journey as the Newark Technical School in 1885, starting with just 88 students. Over the years, it evolved into a respected engineering institution known as Newark College of Engineering. In 1973, it expanded further by adding a School of Architecture, transforming into a polytechnic university that now comprises five colleges and one school. As of the fall semester in 2021, NJIT has an enrollment of approximately 11,900 students hailing from 83 different countries, with around 2,500 of them residing on the main campus, which is situated in Newark's University Heights area.
