NYU Langone nurses win big

Federation of Nurses/UFT members at NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn on Feb. 26 overwhelmingly ratified a contract that provides a 15.8% raise compounded over two years and includes new commitments from the hospital to address the chronic shortage of nurses. The agreement followed weeks of contentious negotiations that brought them to the brink of a strike. The union had filed a strike notice on Feb. 18, 10 days before the contract was due to expire.

VNS Health nurses OK contract

Federation of Nurses/UFT members who are licensed practical nurses with VNS Health overwhelmingly ratified a contract on Jan. 27 that provides a 7.5% increase in base pay over two years while establishing the employer’s contractual obligation to consider factors like parking availability, travel time and level of patient need when scheduling daily caseloads.
New telehealth benefit

The UFT has created a new telehealth benefit for members who are not eligible for city health insurance. UFT members who are substitute paraprofessionals, per-diem teachers and members of the union’s ADAPT Community Network chapters can now access virtual medical care through the AllyHealth Telemedicine Program. The benefit is also being made available to UFT members in the Family Child Care Providers Chapter.
Defending undocumented kids

Facts were the focus of a UFT workshop about how educators can support undocumented students and their families as the new administration steps up immigration enforcement. UFT members from the union’s English language learner focus group met on Jan. 23 at union headquarters to participate in a dry run of the presentation and give their feedback. Eyeglasses and contact lenses

As a member of the UFT Welfare Fund, you and your eligible dependents can obtain optical services once every two years. Your optical benefits entitle you to one pair of eyeglasses and an accompanying eye exam, or to contact lenses. Prescription sunglasses are also covered. To receive reimbursement for both your eye exam and your eyeglasses, you need to obtain both services at the same time and location.
