Since 2018, the NIHR Academy has worked to break down the barriers to career progression in research. But, our portfolio of career development opportunities has become complex. Applicants are often eligible to apply for different programmes at the same career level, which can be confusing.

Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK so the recent news about the MHRA approval of donanemab, the latest disease-modifying drug and the subsequent rejection by NICE, has understandably piqued people’s interest. There are currently around a million people in the UK living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, making up about 60% of cases.

More people with dementia across the UK will be able to take part in research into the condition and help accelerate the development of new treatments. This comes after the Government announces £49.9 million of new funding. The investment will go towards a coordinated network of dementia trials sites across the country.
