Residents on the corner of Abu Govender Road and Andra Drive in Sandfields, Tongaat, have been grappling with ongoing sewage spills left unattended for the past eight months. Frustrated residents told The North Coast Courier the issue has been a recurring nightmare for them for several years. Despite previous interventions by the municipality to address the problem, relief has always been short-lived residents say.

The opening of Ballito’s new playground for 4×4 adrenaline junkies attracted much interest at the weekend. Ballito 4×4 and Off Road Adventures was opened at Collisheen Estate on Saturday, much to the delight of dozens of off-road enthusiasts. Challenging dirt roads, hill tops and a menacing mud pit tested drivers to the limit. Course operator Chad Mackay said he was happy with the turnout, with more than 50 runs pulled through before midday.

The white collar event attracted an attendance of more than a 100 spectators, with 16 fighters, including two ward councillors, billed to have a go at one another in support of the good cause. The goal of the fundraiser is to bring new life to the east and west side of the N2 overpass at Salt Rock, where landscaping efforts are to take place. Aside from this, an inverter for traffic lights will be installed to ease traffic congestion in the area during loadshedding.

Mduduzi Nxumalo (35) will spend the next 40 years behind bars after being sentenced for repeatedly assaulting an 11-year-old girl. Finalised in the KwaDukuza Regional Court last week, Nxumalo’s case related to three separate incidences of sexual assault between February 27 and March 14, 2020, which culminated in rape. Through evidence led by state prosecutor Nokwanda Mthembu, the court heard of the horrifying circumstances surrounding the abuse.

A 16-year-old KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) debt of R14.6-million drew bipartisan concern in KwaDukuza council last week. The debt, owed to the iLembe District Municipality, has accumulated since 2007 and has steadily become untenable for KDM, one of four local municipalities that fall under the iLembe district. It has come under increased scrutiny from iLembe recently as the municipality seeks to recover funds from its considerable list of debtors.
