The North Coast’s outgoing IEB matrics celebrated fantastic results on their last day at high school today. Crawford International College North Coast, Ashton International College Ballito, Curro Salt Rock and Reddam House Ballito all had a matriculating class who wrote the IEB curriculum. They form part of the 2 285 pupils who sat for IEB examinations across KwaZulu-Natal in 2023 and 15 180 countrywide.

Residents on the corner of Abu Govender Road and Andra Drive in Sandfields, Tongaat, have been grappling with ongoing sewage spills left unattended for the past eight months. Frustrated residents told The North Coast Courier the issue has been a recurring nightmare for them for several years. Despite previous interventions by the municipality to address the problem, relief has always been short-lived residents say.

Sixteen months since the Passenger Rail Agency (Prasa) promised residents a return of passenger train services in KwaDukuza, not a single train has been seen running since 2018. In May last year Prasa announced that the Durban to Tongaat and Durban to KwaMashu and Bridge City lines would be the first to resume services the following month.

Ntshawini Community Policing Forum volunteer Obed Mokoena was recognised for his bravery during the KwaDukuza Saps Excellence Awards last Friday. While on a night-time patrol in April, 46-year-old Mokoena and four other patrollers were shot at. He was hit and spent a month in hospital to recover. Since leaving hospital, Mokoena walks on crutches and is unable to travel by taxi as he cannot bend his knee. “I never thought I would be honoured for our work.

Caught in the grip of an alarming crime spike in the Tongaat central business district (CBD), fed-up business owners say they have no choice but to mobilise themselves to fight the problem. Gathering at the Tongaat Community Hall last week to form an interim committee to address the escalating problem, some business owners and residents said they have lost faith in the police, one of the reasons why crimes are often not reported.
