Out Front

Out Front

Out Front was established in 1976 by Phil Price, becoming a leading voice for the LGBT community through its unwavering commitment. In the inaugural issue, Price shared his vision: “Out Front will cater to the needs and desires of gays in the area and will feature articles, thought-provoking editorial, the latest news and exciting photography.” After Price's passing in 1993, Jay Klein and Greg Montoya took over the company, continuing his legacy until 2012. In late January, Colorado residents Jerry Cunningham and his partner, JC McDonald, took ownership of Out Front and its parent company, Q Publishing. We take great pride in stating that Out Front is one of the oldest, continuously running, independently owned LGBT publications in the country. This legacy brings us both pride and a sense of responsibility to continue serving the community.

I’ve always been of two minds about the way big Pride festivals are handled. On the one hand, I think a lot of good comes out of Pride. Some people get a chance to see what it’s like to be their authentic selves for the first time because of Pride. I wrote previously about how my coming out was largely about wanting to join in this celebration of who I am at Pride. And a big, huge Pride festival isn’t going to be easily organized without a corporate sponsor.

Welcome to the gayest time of year! It’s once again time for Pride! Pride means a lot of things for a lot of different people. I talked last year about how Pride was a big part of the reason I came out because I wanted to be part of this celebration of who I was. But Pride is more than a celebration. As a popular slogan reminds us, the first Pride was a riot.

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to attend my first Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco gala at the de Young Museum. It’s just a stone’s throw from my apartment, but that night, it felt like stepping into an entirely different world. The museum’s photo wing was cleverly sectioned off for guests, transformed into a flash-friendly playground with immersive photo booths, 360-degree stop-motion cameras, and pop-up installations around every corner. The crowd came dressed to impress.
