Persuasion

Persuasion

Persuasion is a platform and community for individuals who hold three key beliefs: We aim to create a society where everyone has the freedom to pursue a meaningful life, regardless of their background. We recognize the significance of persuasive dialogue and are committed to protecting free speech and open inquiry against any threats. We strive to engage and persuade those who have differing opinions, rather than resorting to mockery or trolling. In recent years, many political and intellectual movements have leaned towards illiberalism. Advocates for free speech and democratic values have often been too passive, even resigned. It's time for those who cherish these important ideals to actively defend and promote them.

But how well does it work for Hungary’s imitators?

This piece is part of a series, generously made possible by the support of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, on pluralism and dialogue in education. In 2020, Steven Wilson, former education adviser to the governor of Massachusetts, was condemned as racist and fired from his job for writing an essay on the educational philosophy underlying the network of charter schools he founded.

This past semester, I taught a seminar titled “Trump 2.0.” to undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania. I will be honest: it was a deeply unsettling experience. I’ve never taught a course remotely like this one. I doubt very many people have. I’m trained as a political theorist. I have an MA in history, focused on European intellectual and cultural history.
