    Middle school students in Pittsburgh’s Greater Hazelwood neighborhood are getting hands-on with biotechnology thanks to a partnership between Pitt’s Office of Engagement and Community Affairs (ECA) and the Smithsonian Science Education Center. This collaboration brings the Smithsonian Biotechnology Curriculum to Greater Hazelwood, providing students with engaging activities that highlight real-world applications of life sciences education.

    Katie Currie, a senior studying finance and supply chain management in Pitt’s College of Business Administration, won big on “Wheel of Fortune” during the game show’s 50th anniversary week. She appeared on the episode with her identical twin, Christina, a senior at the University of Richmond. The sisters are from Severna Park, Maryland. The twins kicked off the game strong, winning $12,100 in an early puzzle and trips to Portugal and Hawaii in subsequent rounds.

    At 16, Ayisha Morgan-Lee pirouettes to her first International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference and Festival. The event, in Denver, Colorado, places her in a room full of dancers who remind her of all the greats that she has dreamed about and whose images she has collected in a scrapbook: Katherine Dunham, Pearl Primus, Josephine Baker and more. “I fell in love with wanting to dance on stage because I saw people who looked like me,” says Morgan-Lee.

    Cancer, according to Pitt Department of Medicine Assistant Professor Jason Lohmueller, is a “tricky beast.” It changes in response to therapies and, as far as treatment is concerned, it’s sometimes better to think about it as multiple diseases at once. With a new modular technology to deliver immunotherapies to cancer cells, Lohmueller he believes he has helped create a weapon to slay that beast. And together with collaborator Alex Deiters, a chemistry professor in Pitt’s Kenneth P.
