USA Saw Second Busiest Ski Season

Preliminary data from the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) indicates that the 2024-25 season saw the second-highest visitation on record at US ski areas. NEWA total of 61.5 million skier visits represents a 1.7% increase over the previous season. The highest number was in the 2022-23 season which saw 3.9 million more visits. A skier visit is counted each time an individual uses a lift ticket or pass at a ski area.

Inquest Held Into UK Avalanche Victim

27- year old Joshua Byers, from Knaresborough, North Yorkshire was buried by an avalanche at Val Thorens an inquest heard. The death happened after an historic April snowstorm. He was near the roadside in Val Thorens when he was swept up and carried 15m by an avalanche on 17th April. We reported on the incident at the time on PlanetSKI. More Resorts Close in USA but Some Still Open

Several resorts closed at the weekend but there is still skiing to be had with some going into June. NEWOn Sunday May 11th several resorts in Colorado called it a day. BreckenridgeCopper MountainLovelandSkiing and snowboarding is continuing in Arapahoe Basin in Colorado that plans to be open until June 8th. The resort saw 30cm of fresh snow last week. Mt Hutt is planning to open on Saturday May 31st. It will be its earliest opening for 16 years. NEWThe opening will also include June 1st and June 2nd if conditions allow. Mt. Hutt will then be open on June 7th and June 8th before beginning operations seven days a week on Saturday, June 14th. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation, FIS, has published its preliminary 2025-26 Alpine World Cup race calendar. NEWThere are some interesting changes and developments in, what will be, an Olympic season with the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Games. There will be a pause of World Cup races from February 1st to February 28th for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Crans-Montana, Switzerland, will host back-to-back World Cup speed races for the women and the men.

US Snowboarder Who Fell From Chairlift Dies of His Injuries

32-year-old father of two, Donovan Romero, fell from a lift in Keystone in Colorado last December. The lift had a safety bar, but it had not been lowered. There are further calls to make their use compulsory. NEWThe accident happened on December 11th 2024 and Donovan Romero fell almost 20m to the ground from the Ruby Express chairlift sustaining fatal injuries. He was wearing a helmet at the time. Mr Romero was taken to St. Anthony Hospital in nearby Lakewood.
FIS Teams Up With Azerbaijan as Skiing in Asia Grows
