Preliminary data from the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) indicates that the 2024-25 season saw the second-highest visitation on record at US ski areas. NEWA total of 61.5 million skier visits represents a 1.7% increase over the previous season. The highest number was in the 2022-23 season which saw 3.9 million more visits. A skier visit is counted each time an individual uses a lift ticket or pass at a ski area.

27- year old Joshua Byers, from Knaresborough, North Yorkshire was buried by an avalanche at Val Thorens an inquest heard. The death happened after an historic April snowstorm. He was near the roadside in Val Thorens when he was swept up and carried 15m by an avalanche on 17th April. We reported on the incident at the time on PlanetSKI. Several resorts closed at the weekend but there is still skiing to be had with some going into June. NEWOn Sunday May 11th several resorts in Colorado called it a day. BreckenridgeCopper MountainLovelandSkiing and snowboarding is continuing in Arapahoe Basin in Colorado that plans to be open until June 8th. The resort saw 30cm of fresh snow last week. May 7 @Arapahoe_Basin – all lifts spinning.

The clear up continues and we report on which areas are still open and where summer skiing is possible in the Alps. NEWThe high alpine passes that are closed in the winter are now being cleared of snow so they can open for the summer. There is still snow at altitude in the Alps. On Sunday May 11th the ski resort of Stubai near Innsbruck in Austria called it a day. A handful of other glacier areas in Austria remain open:Hintertux – year round. Kitzsteinhorn – shuts 18th May.
