Thunderstreak — even the name evokes drama. Offshore powerboat racer Tommy Sopwith named his 31 Bertram competition model Thunderstreak when he bought her from Dick Bertram. Back in 1960, this new boat model, with a Ray Hunt deep-V bottom and low deadrise design, had won Bertram the Miami-Nassau race by showing incredible prowess in rough water.

Dense white walls of spray crashed over the bow and buffeted the towering enclosed bridge. The wipers sprinted from side to side, flicking the spray from the boat’s brow like a fighter saying, “Is that all you got?” I’m reminded of the maxim builders like Maritimo often use: You’ll break before the boat does. This would certainly be the case on this day.

It’s an overused cliché to say that a photo is worth a thousand words. As someone who makes his living in the word business, I can pontificate ad nauseam about powerfully crafted prose (see what I mean?). But getting a smiling selfie from Karen and our four-month-old Caleb while she was back at home and I was well offshore and outside cell range made me rethink my stance—if only for a moment. Knowing things were going well on the home front while I slaved away at my day job offered a huge relief.

If I had a dollar for every time someone told one of my parents that I looked just like Opie Taylor, Liberdade would probably be a much bigger boat. As a young redheaded boy in the ‘60s with a striking resemblance to Ron Howard’s character on The Andy Griffith Show, it was something I grew accustomed to hearing. While being a fan of the popular show, interestingly, Opie wasn’t my favorite character.
