Sad news today of the passing of Eva Brann, the long-time tutor at St. John’s College in Annapolis, at the age of 95. She was still leading seminars well into her 90s and was a legend well beyond the borders of St. John’s. Few teachers were as dedicated as she to the old tradition of the Great Books, for she understood the greatness of classic texts was intrinsic, and not susceptible to the fickleness of historicist corruption.

Many of the media headlines reporting on Israel’s air strikes on Iran in the middle of the night last night say something along the lines of “could lead to an escalation of the regional war.” I have news for everybody: World War III has been underway at least since October 7 of last year, whether we want to acknowledge it or not. The only question is whether its scale and level of intensity will rise to the level of the previous two world wars. But let’s look at some facts.

Singer/songwriter John Hiatt finished a three-night run at the Dakota last night. We went to see each of his shows this past Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings. His tour continues tomorrow night in Boulder (see his mostly sold-out tour dates here). I snapped the photo below from our table on Thursday. I was counting on yesterday’s show to let me take a better shot from a table in front of him, but last night he asked for no photos.

The third evening of festivities at the Democratic National Convention culminated in the acceptance speech of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The preceding speakers pushed him out of prime time and into proximity with the George McGovern Memorial time slot. Walz was to be the last speaker during the 9:00 p.m. hour (EDT). Oprah Winfrey made a “surprise appearance.” Her star turn was not listed on the hourly schedule released by the DNC.

President Biden took the George McGovern Memorial Time Slot at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago last night. I have posted the video below. The White House has not yet posted a transcript. The Time transcript is posted here. Time times the transcript as a “27 minute read.” On a feels-like basis, it’s more like 27 hours. The New York Post cover (right) captures the indignity of it all. It is keyed to Steven Nelson’s cover story.
