The No. 5 W.K. Reed Navy League Cadet Corps based out of Prince Albert held their annual ceremonial review at the Prince Albert Armoury on May 30. The program included an inspection of the cadets, a march past, and an awards and medal presentation. The cadets who participated said it was a rewarding experienceDuring the ceremony, there was a special award presented to Petty Officer Ryan Boka. Boka received the Navy League Medal of Excellence.

The number of structures destroyed and communities evacuated continues to grow in Saskatchewan according to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA). The Tri-Community area of La Ronge, Lac La Ronge and Air Ronge were evacuated Monday as the Ditch Fire surrounded the communities. Premier Scott Moe acknowledged the number of evacuations have been growing in Saskatchewan in recent days.

SPSA Vice President of Operations Steve Roberts told reporters on Monday that the wildfire situation continues to get worse with more communities evacuating and fires growing in size. As of Monday afternoon there 16 active fires, five contained, six not contained, four are under ongoing assessment and one is under the protected values classification, with 219 reported since the start of the season, well above the five-year average of 131.

Residents of Kinistino are in mourning after a popular goaltender and member of the community was killed in a collision. Eighteen-year-old Hajner Taylor died in a fatal collision near Gronlid on Thursday, May 29. A funeral service will be held at the Kinistino Community Centre on Wednesday at 2 p.m.Taylor was a popular member of Kinistino’s minor hockey community, where he was known as “Hajner the Entertainer” for his celebratory dances after big saves.
