Jason Kerr Daily Herald The Prince Albert Predators clinched first place with a pair of victories over the weekend. The Predators held off a resilient Swift Current Wolverines squad for a 16-12 win on Saturday, then followed it up with a comfortable 19-3 win over Moose Jaw on Sunday. Predators head coach Lucas Wells said they were glad to lock up top spot in the Prairie Gold Junior Lacrosse League “We had a good bounce back game on Sunday,” Wells said.

Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) officials won’t know until Tuesday just how many houses, cabins, vehicles or sheds burned in the community of Denare Beach, but they expect that number to be in the hundreds. SPSA vice-president of operations Steve Roberts said they will have a full count of all values lost in the community by the end of the day Tuesday. The SPSA has counted more than 350 structures lost due to wildfire.

Prince Albert cricketers Yadwinder Singh and Hardeep Bains made the trip to Edmonton on June 1 where they suited up for Saskatchewan in the Cricket Canada Domestic Prairie Zone high performance matches. Team Saskatchewan played four games in total: two each against Manitoba and Alberta. Bains said it was a great experience. “(It) felt really good. (I was) really excited when they announced the team and I was on it,” Bains said.

The final months of the school year are a time when students test their running, jumping, and throwing abilities in track and field meets across Saskatchewan, but one Prince Albert school is trying out a new set of games drawn from Indigenous culture. On May 29, students at St. Catherine’s School tested their skills in games of Jump the Stick and Caribou Hop, among others.

Saskatchewan Junior A hockey teams selected 11 Prince Albert Mintos as the SJHL held their annual draft on Tuesday. The Battlefords North Stars led the way selecting three Mintos: Cooper Sawatzky, Ryder Hagel, and Madden Dell. The La Ronge Ice Wolves selected two Mintos: Liam Acorn and Beau Anholt, and the Melfort Mustangs, Nipawin Hawks, Kindersley Klippers, Flin Flon Bombers, Yorkton Terriers, and Weyburn Red Wings selected one Minto each.
