May 20, 2025In some ways, I’m probably the worst person to review To Ease My Troubled Mind. The subject, Billy Childish, sounds familiar, but I wouldn’t be able to pick him out of a lineup or tell you what he’s known for. On the other hand, I’m a great person to review this book because this was a whole new world of a fascinating individual. I was open to having my socks blown clean off my feet. For those unfamiliar with Childish, he’s a man of myriad talents.

Mar 27, 2025Alison Braun’s first book covered punk artists from the ’80s and early ’90s, while her second volume, Shot in the Dark, focuses on the metal and thrash scenes of the same era. This hardcover book features a diverse array of artists. Some are well-known, including Slayer, Metallica, Motörhead, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Others may be lesser-known to those outside the metal genre, such as Corrosion Of Conformity, Kreator, Exodus, and Testament.

They were a nuanced band: smart, propulsive as hell, inventive, with a massive guitar sound. One of my biggest musical regrets is not getting to see them live.

Years ago, I went to see Dark Thoughts at the short-lived DIY space the Cherry Pit in Seattle. As a relative newcomer to the city, I wasn’t familiar with the long-running opener Lysol. What I witnessed during their set was something I’d never forget. It was like a firm slap across the face. Singer, Nearl Haggard would shove the mic in their mouth, thrash around, and bend over backwards. It was beautiful. Trying to find more about the band online was difficult.
