Walter Worrall started his journey in the newspaper industry in 1947, taking on roles such as printer, ad salesman, and publisher. In 1968, he acquired the News-Record of Maplewood and South Orange from Gregory Hewlitt. Prior to this acquisition, Worrall had spent a decade working as a compositor and eight years as the sales and business manager at The Citizen of Morris County. In 1971, he expanded his portfolio by buying the West Orange Chronicle, East Orange Record, and Orange Transcript from Charles Moreau.

Many would agree West Orange is a great place to live but growing up in the 1960s, Mark Ehrenkranz, had a disdain for the town. “All the houses looked the same,” he said. “Everybody was so concerned with how their lawn looked, keeping up with the Joneses. There was so much gossip. Everybody was so concerned with success. Competition. It kind of bothered me.”Ehrenkranz attended Mount Pleasant and Pleasantdale Elementary Schools, Lincoln Jr. High, and Mountain High School.

Twice a year Elusive Sounds holds a record fair at The Woodlands. And twice a year, the venue is mobbed with record collectors. This year they had more than 30 vendors selling records, CDs, comic books, books, shoes, clothing, buttons, and other things. The event was sponsored by Jennifer McManus Real Estate and Furnace Manufacturing. The Maplewood Record Fair was started by Charles Maggio and Jennifer Klein back in May 2019.

MAPLEWOOD/SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — The third-seeded Columbia High School boys tennis team had a great run in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 state tournament. The Cougars advanced to the championship, but lost at top-seeded Westfield, 5-0, on Monday, June 2. CHS finished the season with an 8-7 record.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — The 10th-seeded Bloomfield High School softball team lost at seventh-seeded West Orange, 13-3, in the first round of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 state tournament on Thursday, May 29. Senior Emma Freid had two singles; and junior Samantha Ramos, freshman Gabrielle Bartley and senior Madison Simone each had a single and an RBI for the Bengals, who finished the season with a 12-12 record.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Bloomfield High School track and field athletes gave good efforts at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Group 4 state championships at Franklin High School in Somerset on Friday and Saturday, May 30-31. The following are the boys’ results:Senior Nicholas Obiedzinski took eighth place in the pole vault at 12 feet. Senior Alexander Travers was 11th in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.15 seconds.
