This unique experiment is situated in the picturesque locales of southern India. Sri Aurobindo Ghose, a well-known Indian seer and spiritual visionary, envisioned the ideal metropolis. The township was founded in February 1986 by Mirra Alfassa, also known as The Mother, a yoga instructor, spiritual guide, and associate of Sri Aurobindo.

The district sits at the confluence of the rivers Ganga and Brahmaputra. Bagerhat, part of Sundarbans, was founded by the governor and Sufi saint Ulugh Khan Jahan in the 15th century.
