The oddity that is taking motorcycle racing by stormOn Sunday of the MotoAmerica races being held at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta recently, I was standing on the bridge over the front straight as the competitors in the final race, King of the Baggers, began to roll out of the pits and grid up. I looked out past turn 12 towards the main entrance/exit, and only a few vehicles were filing out, following the Superbikes Race 2 completion.

A hidden gem in the Southern SmokiesI first came to ride the Cherohala Skyway a few years after it opened, in 1998 or ’99. I rode up with a group of CMA friends from the Atlanta area, and we spent a day riding the parkway from Robbinsville NC to Tellico Plains TN. After a hearty late lunch at the popular Tellicafé on the western end of the skyway, the group turned around and rode back across that afternoon.

A few things for motorists to considerReturning from a road trip to spend a few days with my mother, I was riding home on the Honda SCL500 we still have on long-term loan. Approaching a roundabout on a rather rural section of road, I entered cautiously but correctly, making sure I had room behind and before me.

The Motor Company’s CEO Steps DownNews came today that Harley-Davidson’s CEO, Jochen Zeitz, is stepping down from his position. The company is now beginning the search for a new leader. The Motor Company issued a statement late yesterday confirming that Zeitz was stepping down, and that the search for a new CEO was commencing. According to the statement, Zeitz is retiring after five years as the brand’s CEO.

A home away from home in the southern Smokies4 1/2 years. That’s how long it’s been since the last time I rolled in and set foot on the grounds of Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge in Stecoah, North Carolina. Had it really been that long? My memories of our last trip here in many respects feel like yesterday. Phil, Ted, my friend Lyle, and myself, all enjoying one of the most beautiful, colorful autumns in recent memory, up in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Hooked on the WindMost who took up motorcycle riding as kids typically got their introduction on pull-start Sears & Roebuck minibikes, Honda Trail 70 or 90 bikes, or maybe something like a Yamaha YZ80. I got my start on a scooter. I was 14 years old, Christmas of 1962, and to my surprise, I was gifted a brand new Vespa 150 motor scooter by my parents. From that day forward, my whole life changed. I was free.

Catching the tail-end of the famed Bike WeekIn the early hours of Thursday, March 6, 2025, I left home pulling my toy hauler/trailer, headed for Daytona Beach. I had loaded in the trailer my Honda Monkey and CB500X , and my friend David’s Triumph Bonneville 1200. David was pulling his teardrop camper with his Mercedes as we headed on our way to Florida. The weather was good and we made it to the Florida line somewhere around noon.
