‘The Samaja’ is synonymous with newspapers in Odisha, being a highly circulated and widely read Odia daily that has proudly completed its 101st year of publication. Established in 1919 by the visionary nationalist and freedom fighter, Utkalamani Pandit Gopabandhu Das, ‘The Samaja’ is known for its commitment to accuracy, authenticity, and the fundamental principles of journalism. Over the years, it has evolved into a significant institution. In the post-independence period, ‘The Samaja’ has played a vital role in promoting social values and contributing to nation-building. Today, it boasts a readership of around 1.6 million, with a daily circulation of approximately 350,000 copies. The newspaper publishes from eight locations, including Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Balasore, Cuttack, Kolkata, Rourkela, Sambalpur, and Vizag, reaching audiences in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal. ‘The Samaja’ is owned and managed by the ‘Servants of the People Society’ (Lok Sevak Mandal) based in New Delhi, a trust established by the legendary Punjab Keshri Lala Lajpat Rai. Over the years, many prominent figures have contributed to ‘The Samaja,’ leaving a lasting impact on the collective consciousness of the Oriya people. Key contributors include Punjab Keshri Lala Lajpat Rai, Utkalamani Pandit Gopabandhu Das, Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tandon, Sri Balwant Rai Mehta, former Prime Minister Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri, former Vice-President Sri Krishna Kant, former Odisha Chief Minister Shri Biswanath Dash, and Padma Bhushan Dr. Radhanath Rath. In addition to providing news, ‘The Samaja’ is dedicated to its social responsibilities and values. The ‘Samaja Relief Committee’ has been a key aspect of its social initiatives over the years.
