At the same time, Bring Her Back shows that, in ways mostly positive but slightly negative, moviegoers might be clued in to A24’s fright flight shenanigans. When considering the post-Memorial Day weekend, an estimated total of $152 million is arguably better than satisfactory for such a “weekend 22 or weekend 23” on which Hollywood didn’t at least try to offer up a big deal tentpole. Yes, it’s below the $166 million achieved in 2014, which also featured the $67 million debut of Maleficent.

The Friday box office news, including…Karate Kid: Legends kicks below its weight class for a likely $20 million launch. Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible 8 both hold fine in their post-holiday frames. The Phoenician Scheme will — of course —nab the year’s top per-theater average. Bring Her Back is expected to struggle to reach $7 million in its domestic debut. Final Destination 6, Sinners and Friendship continue to pull aspirational grosses.

Lilo & Stitch earned another $10 million on its sixth day of domestic release, bringing its North American total to $207 million as its global total reached $421 million. With a likely end-of-Sunday cume over $570 million worldwide, it is currently the third-biggest global grosser of the year, behind China’s animated Ne Zha 2 ($2.2 billion, most of that of course from China) and WBD and Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie($941 million).
