Sinners topped on Friday with $19.2 million, but the *other* big Warner Bros. Discovery title is still expected to “win” the weekend. This will amusingly be the second time Warner Bros. has had the first and second-place finishers on Easter weekend, following the pre-Avengers: Endgame debut of The Curse of La Llorona ($26.3 million) and the $16.5 million (-33%) third weekend of Shazam!.

At least for one day, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s Sinners is the top movie at the domestic box office. With a solid $19.2 million on Friday, Warner Bros. Discovery’s $90 million, R-rated, original horror flick debuted slightly ahead of the $16 million third-Friday gross for Warner Bros. Discovery’s $150 million, PG-rated video game-based comedy. A Minecraft Movie might “win” the weekend with around $45 million, with Sinners placing second with over/under $43 million.

In a skewed coincidence, this year’s “Superman Day” arrives concurrently as Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie passes $300 million in North America. The Jack Black-starring video game flick just became the biggest domestic earner since Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine last July.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s Sinners earned $4.7 million in preview grosses, including its limited Wednesday debut in 70mm auditoriums. In terms of big-deal scary movies, it’s understandably below the likes of Halloween ($7.7 million toward a $77 million opening weekend in 2018) and It Chapter One ($13.5 million toward a $123 million Fri-Sun debut in 2017).

The second trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps is, at a glance, relatively identical to the tease we saw at CinemaCon, except for us getting a different (and less cryptic) “Galactus” reveal. Upon rewatching, while a better trailer than its predecessor, it reminds me most of the second trailer for the last version of Fantastic Four. No, this Disney-released, MCU-adjacent revamp bears little resemblance to the misguided and ill-received grimdark reboot that crashed and burned a decade ago.
