Firearm: Springfield Armory TRP 1911 AOS 9 mm (MSRP: $1,999)Springfield Armory added several 9 mm chamberings to the TRP line in 2025, and we’ve chosen the 4.25-inch barrel, AOS-equipped version for today’s kit. This is a marked departure for Springfield Armory, as all previous TRP pistols have been chambered in .45 ACP, providing yet another data point toward the ubiquity of 9 mm. Fear not, those who prefer their 1911s in .45 ACP, there are plenty of TRP variants in the old standard.

Not long ago, I went to an area gun show and, of course, took a couple of guns to trade. At the safety table were two middle-age deputy sheriffs, nice guys. I handed one a double-action Smith & Wesson revolver and gave the other a double-action Colt revolver. The first deputy held the gun and just stared at it; he clearly didn’t know how to open it. I told him to push forward on that little button right there. He did, and the second deputy started pushing forward on the cylinder release on the Colt.

The new 8.6 BLK cartridge looks to be a step closer to the general-purpose role the .300 BLK was originally intended to fill. When Advanced Armament Corporation (AAC) introduced the .300 AAC Blackout (BLK) cartridge a decade and a half ago, it started something. Prior to the BLK, subsonic, centerfire-rifle shooting was mostly a handloading-only proposition with cartridges never intended to deliver subsonic performance.
