A whooping cough outbreak began last month in Snohomish County. Twelve different schools and a child care center reported whooping cough in the past five weeks, the Snohomish County Health Department said. This past week, Cascade View Elementary in Snohomish was one of the latest. A health department spokeswoman said Cascade View had multiple cases. Other cases have been noted at Frank Wagner Elementary in Monroe and Cascade High School in Everett.

SNOHOMISH — A federal government cutback has food banks such as Snohomish’s hunting for help. The state Department of Agriculture saw a $4.7 million cancellation of USDA commodities it would normally distribute to pantries in coming months. This constitutes items including “milk, dried plums, dried cranberries, canned chicken, turkey breasts and chicken breasts,” Agriculture said on its website.

CLEARVIEW — A second marijuana retailer wanting to open along Highway 9 aroused not just a formal complaint to county officials filed by a competitor but also a room-filling meeting about the topic last week. Hangar 420 recently filed papers to open at the corner of Highway 9 and 180th Street, sharing the yellow building that has Woodinville Saws & Mowers. Another pot shop, The Kushery, vacated the building and relocated about a mile away. The formal distance between the two is 1.1 miles.

MONROE — Online pictures of a yard filled with water at a house in the Fryelands Neighborhood during Ziply Fiber’s underground installation work caught neighbors’ attention last week. A Ziply subcontractor hit a city water main, said Ryan Luckin, a Ziply spokesperson. “Ziply, the sub-contractor and the city inspector made contact with this resident to investigate the claim of damage in the crawl space. Those requests for access to the home were denied by the homeowner,” Luckin said.

MONROE — The appeal case of the “Firefighter 8,” a religious discrimination case of eight Snohomish Fire and Rescue (SRFR) frontline personnel suing for back pay after they were put on months of unpaid leave for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine, has its next step in federal appeals court this week. Oral arguments will be heard April 3 in Portland in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
