Council to vote on police camera system during May 15 meeting

The Mountlake Terrace City Council is scheduled to vote on a proposed Flock safety system for the police department during its May 15 meeting. Discussed initially during the March 27 meeting, the council will review and vote on the license plate reader cameras and the yearly service contract. The council is also scheduled to discuss and vote on an interlocal agreement with the US Department of Agriculture’s Waterfowl Management Program to manage the goose population at Ballinger Park.
School board to vote on performance-based pathway for high school graduation, May 13

The Edmonds School Board of Directors is scheduled to vote on a board policy for performance-based pathways to high school graduation on May 13. The State Board of Education created a new performance-based pathway option to help students meet the graduation pathway requirement. To offer the option, the district must adopt a policy and develop procedures that define its implementation. The proposed policy follows the Washington State School Directors’s model.

The Mountlake Terrace City Council voted May 8 to further discuss a wildlife agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The USDA’s Waterfowl Management Program helps control wildlife to prevent conflict with humans. This could involve removing or eliminating wildlife from an area where it may damage agriculture, property or natural resources, or pose health and safety risks.

Volunteers of America Western Washington Philanthropy Officer Joel Feldman updated the Mountlake Terrace City Council on the Lynnwood Neighborhood Center during its May 1 meeting. Feldman said the center, located at Highway 99 and 19th Street Southwest, will be a 40,000-square-foot health and human service one-stop shop for South Snohomish County and North King County.

After Brier voters rejected the levy lift to improve police staffing and prevent the city from bankruptcy, the question of what will happen next remains. “We respect the will of the voters, although we were hoping for a different outcome,” Mayor Dale Kaemingk said. The measure would have increased the City of Brier’s regular property tax levy to maintain public safety and other essential city services.

About 100 people showed up at the intersection of 236th Street Southwest and 56th Avenue West Thursday for a peaceful May Day demonstration protesting the Trump administration. One of those demonstrators, Sarah J., said that the protesters mainly received positive responses from drivers with a few middle fingers here and there. After 36 years and five months of dedicated service to the Mountlake Terrace branch of the U.S. Postal Service, Jocelyn Neri took in her last batch of mail on April 30. R.J. Perna, a branch customer, praised Neri’s work. “Jocelyn is very well known for her exceptionally pleasant personality and courteous assistance to customers,” Perna said. In fact, Neri’s customer service and contagious, friendly demeanor earned her recognition from Mayor Kyoko Matsumoto Wright and the City of Mountlake Terrace.
