Independent Newspapers is a self-sufficient publisher based in Washington County, Rhode Island. They produce a weekly newspaper called The Independent and a magazine titled South County Life. The company was established in 1997 by experienced newspaper publisher Frederick J. Wilson III, who aimed to create a weekly publication free from corporate influence. Although Wilson is no longer part of the organization, it was subsequently acquired by Edward A. Sherman Publishing Company, the same group behind The Newport Daily News. Independent Newspapers collaborates with The Newport Daily News to share advertising resources.

    SOUTH KINGSTOWN – In late March, when boys lacrosse teams were still finalizing their rosters, North Kingstown shut out South Kingstown 5-0 in a scrimmage. It didn’t count for anything in the standings, but that was the Rebels’ starting point in a new division. On Friday, the two teams played again, this time in the Division I quarterfinal with everything on the line – unofficially dubbed the South County championship. The Rebels won 8-7 in overtime.
