    The dust hasn’t quite settled on the 2025 legislative session, but here’s a sampling of bills already sent to Gov. Greg Abbott. • A ban on clubs supporting gay teens in public schools won final legislative passage on Saturday. The measure sponsored by state Sen. Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe, would prohibit schools from authorizing or sponsoring student clubs based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Several Democrats argued passionately against the bill, the Texas Tribune reported.

    Former rivals El Campo, Needville and Wharton rejoined Bay City’s district along with 26-4A holdovers Brazosport, Columbia and Sweeny to form the new 29-4A. The new district was one of the most top-heavy in Region IV, with Columbia (7-5, 18-14-2) clinching the final playoff spot with three games remaining. Sinton swept Columbia in the opening round of the Division II playoffs.

    The Bay City Ladycats playoff streak ended in 2025 after back-to-back postseason appearances in the previous two seasons. Bay City remained in a district with Brazosport, Columbia, and Sweeny but saw El Campo, Needville, and Wharton return after the departures of Iowa Colony, La Marque, and Stafford following the latest realignment last February. Needville (12-0, 24-7) captured an undefeated district championship but lost in the second round of the Division I playoffs.

    For the second consecutive season, the Tidehaven Tigerettes made a deep run in the playoffs. With most of its team returning from a year ago, Tidehaven (10-4, 21-15) advanced to the third round before losing to Santa Gertrudis Academy. Tidehaven had three first-team 25-3A all-district selections: pitcher Kailea Freeman, outfielder Maleah Galvan and catcher Addison Duckett. Freeman surpassed 300 career strikeouts in her senior campaign. She struck out 142 batters in 109 1/3 innings in the circle.

    Tidehaven High School senior Ritchie ZGarcia will represent the school one final time at the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 2A-4A All-Star Game on June 14 at Dell Diamond Park in Round Rock. ZGarcia was one of four pitchers named to the South team, which will play the North squad to represent the state’s best. Sweeny’s Todd Foley, Danbury’s Rusty Sample and Rogers’ Nash Fares will coach the South team.
