The Bay City Blackcats had a historic 2025 campaign. Bay City won its district for the first time under head coach Jesse Herrea. The Blackcats finished 19-2-6 overall and won District 22-4A with an 11-0-3 mark. Herrera has completed a swift turnaround at Bay City. When he arrived in 2021, Bay City finished the previous year winless in its district. The Blackcats won three games in the district in Herrera’s first season before jumping to a 12-2 mark in 2023.

Tidehaven High School senior Mary Johnson had an eventful week. The Angelo State volleyball commit finished third in the girls’ long jump on May 1 at the Class 3A State Track & Field Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, and then one week later played in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches small school girls’ basketball all-star game.

The future is bright for the Bay City Ladycats soccer program. After a historic senior class graduated in 2024, Bay City kept the ball rolling with a fresh crop of talented underclassmen, which led it to a fifth consecutive undefeated district championship. Bay City’s roster included 15 underclassmen with eight freshmen. The youth helped fill the voids left by former stars Rubi Ortiz, Isabelle Villalovos and Alyssa Castro. Even with the new roster, Bay City remained the class of District 22-4A.

Last season, Tidehaven entered the playoffs as the fourth seed but made a run to the third round. The Tigers finished one game better in District 25-3A, rising to second place. The extra win gave Tidehaven the top seed in Class 3A, Division II. On Thursday, Tidehaven played a one-game bi-district series against Stockdale at La Grange High School. Tidehaven made a furious rally in the seventh inning but fell short by one run, 9-8.

The Tidehaven Tigerettes knocked off a higher seed in the Class 3A, Division II postseason for the second consecutive series. Tidehaven did not look like the lower seed in its best-of-three series with Cotulla. The Tigerettes swept their area round opponent with 16-3 and 12-1 scores Thursday and Friday at Kenedy High School. Tidehaven beat Poth in its one-game bi-district series, 8-3, to reach the area round. The Tigerettes have outscored their playoff opponents 36-7.
