The Cricketer

The Cricketer is a monthly magazine dedicated to English cricket, featuring articles and photography covering international, county, and club matches. Founded in 1921 by Sir Pelham Warner, a former England captain who later became a cricket writer, Warner served as the magazine's editor until 1963. Notable later editors include E. W. Swanton and Christopher Martin-Jenkins. In addition to reporting on current cricket events, The Cricketer has played a significant role in documenting the sport's history. One notable contribution includes the discovery of a letter in The Weekly Journal from July 21, 1722, which references an early match between London and Dartford on July 18, 1722. The magazine is also behind the National Village Cup, an annual tournament for village cricket teams, culminating in a final at Lord's. Additionally, it organizes the Cricketer Cup, a competition for old boys' teams from public schools, which started with 16 teams in 1967 and has grown since then. For over 80 years, The Cricketer operated as an independent publication until it was acquired by Wisden in 2003, leading to a merger with Wisden Cricket Monthly. The new publication, The Wisden Cricketer, thrived under the editorship of John Stern for eight years. In December 2010, Test Match Extra Ltd., which owned a cricket website of the same name, purchased the magazine from BSkyB. By May 2011, the magazine dropped 'Wisden' from its title and was rebranded as The Cricketer (in association with Wisden). Stern left his editorial role soon after. In January 2012, Andrew Miller took over as editor, with former Nottinghamshire cricketer Andy Afford as publishing director, who later became managing director. When Miller left, Simon Hughes, a former bowler for Middlesex and Durham, was appointed editor-at-large in September 2014. Alec Swann joined as head of Editorial Planning & Production but left when Hughes became the full Editor starting from the April 2016 edition. The Cricketer is the best-selling cricket magazine globally, with an audited circulation of 22,000 copies. It is accessible in digital format for mobile and tablet users through platforms like iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon.com. The Cricketer Publishing Limited owns The Cricketer as well as other assets, including CricketArchive, The National Village Cup, The
