The pitch will be a good place to stop this week if you are a fan of girls high school soccer. While the games may not have too much effect on state tournament berths, they should be entertaining affairs that will give the teams a measurement of where they are as the postseason nears. There is a taste of postseason action in track and field as the New Castle County championships head to Saint Mark’s on Friday and Saturday. That follows a Monday with events in Greenville and Odessa.

MILLTOWN – Saint Mark’s broke open a defensive-minded softball battle against Delaware Military with three fifth-inning runs in a 4-1 win on a busy May 3 at Saint Mark’s. The game was the final of three Spartans athletic contests on campus that afternoon, and the softballers joined the baseball and boys lacrosse teams in the win column.

WILMINGTON – Saint Mark’s put the heat on Tower Hill from the start, scoring four times in a five-minute span in the first half on the way to a 5-0 girls soccer win on May 3. The Spartans had a goal disallowed in the eighth minute, but that was about the only thing that didn’t go their way in the first half. In the 10th, Whitney Evancho sent a long through ball toward the Hillers’ defensive end, and Ava Danese caught up to it and was one-on-one with Tower Hill goalkeeper Sienna Nygard.

As the College of Cardinals gathers in Rome for the conclave that will elect our next pope, the rest of us may feel like we have no real role to play in the process. And yet, that is absolutely not the case. While the priests of Rome no longer cast ballots as they did in the early centuries of the church, and the laity are no longer charged with the task of approving the result, we can and should continue to do what Christians have done for every papal election throughout history: pray.
