The East County Californian has proudly served as the local newspaper for the eastern San Diego area since its founding in 1892. Generations of residents have grown up with us, whether through reading our articles, delivering our papers, or interning at our office, while our high school sports coverage has kept the community informed about local teams. With a deep-rooted history in the area, we continue to maintain a dedicated readership of over 71,000 each week. For more than 120 years, we have focused on providing in-depth coverage of local news for the communities of Spring Valley, Lemon Grove, El Cajon, La Mesa, Santee, and Lakeside.

The Gulls failed to qualify for the Calder Cup playoffs while finishing ninth in the 10-team Pacific Division that awards playoff berths to the division’s top seven teams.

    A sellout crowd of 12,920 fans greeted the San Diego Gulls on Fan Appreciation Night Saturday, April 19, at Pechanga Arena San Diego. It marked the Gulls’ final home game of the season and also the final regular season outing for the top developmental affiliate of the NHL Anaheim Ducks, which found itself locked out of postseason play for the third consecutive season.

    The Valhalla High School boys lacrosse team ended the 2024 season with a string of meaningful games. The Norsemen hope to do it again this spring. Seeded fourth in last year’s San Diego Section Division III bracket, Valhalla defeated fifth-seeded Sage Creek, 10-3, in the quarterfinals to advance to meet top-seeded West Hills in an all-East County semifinal contest.

    Entering the final quarter of the 2025 high school spring sports season, the Granite Hills baseball team and El Cajon Valley boys volleyball team remain top contenders to capture San Diego Section championships. Granite Hills entered the week once again on top of the Division I baseball power rankings with a 14-0-2 record, 6-0 in Grossmont Hills League play. The Eagles continued to lead the second-ranked Point Loma Pointers (11-5-1) for supremacy in the division rankings.
