The Herald Democrat

The Herald Democrat, which caters to Leadville and Lake County in Colorado, has its roots in some of the area's oldest newspapers, such as the Reveille, the Chronicle, the Herald, and the Democrat. The Daily Herald released its first issue on October 21, 1879, and the Democrat began publishing in January 1880. In 1886, C. C. Davis brought together the Chronicle, Herald, and Democrat under a single ownership.

LCSD adopts school cell phone policy

Lake County School District will implement a policy that will restrict when and where students can use their cell phone or other communication devices. The Board of Education passed the policy at their June 9 meeting and it will take effect in the 2025-2026 school year. The policy outlines different rules for different grade levels. Pre-K through eighth grade will not be allowed to use cell phones on school premises during the school day.
City, county and LCSD discuss indoor rec

The Board of County Commissioners, the Leadville City Council and the Board of Education met at Colorado Mountain College for a joint work session discussing indoor recreation options for the community. No official decisions were made but feedback was given to a project team. In 2024, Lake County Government held a town hall regarding their options for indoor recreation with the city and school district in attendance.
Monument to Bill Gregory installed at courthouse

A monument to Bill Gregory was installed on the Lake County Courthouse lawn on Saturday, June 14. A ceremony was held to honor the former Lake County Commissioner. Gregory’s family traveled from across the country to attend the ceremony. His children, Jean Kochevar and Jim Gregory, attended to speak about their father. Bill Gregory’s colleagues and friends, Howard Tritz, Carl Miller and Michael Kendrick also spoke.
Australian cyclist trains in Leadville for 3,000-mile race

In preparation for the Race Across America, Dr. Chris Lekich traveled from Queensland, Australia to Leadville for altitude training at 10,200 feet. Lekich is a surgeon who specializes in treating a condition called lipedema. Lipedema is almost exclusively found in women and causes enlargement of the legs due to a build up of fat deposits. The cause is unknown but is believed to involve genetic and hormonal factors that regulate the lymphatic system.
Local orgs prep for outside funding cuts

At the Leadville city council’s meeting on June 3, Lake County manager Candace Bryans gave a presentation on cuts at the state and federal levels. Bryans briefed city council on the impacts from both Colorado’s $1.2 billion budget shortfall and proposed budget changes at the federal level. Bryans stated that for Lake County government, the Department of Human Services, Lake County Public Health and the Office of Emergency Management could see an impact in their funding or operations.
Leadville celebrates Pride 2025

Leadville and Twin Lakes celebrated the third annual Leadville Pride celebration on June 6 and June 7. This is the first year that Leadville Pride has been a part of Mountain Pride, an organization that represents Summit, Eagle and Lake counties. Before any of the Pride events began, the Board of County Commissioners signed a proclamation stating Lake County’s recognition of Pride Month and its commitment to protecting the rights of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Barn Pond flow restored

The Twin Lakes Barn Pond had its flow restored via the Berrier Creek channel on May 23. A local group called Friends of Berrier Creek and Barn Pond purchased water from the City of Pueblo in order to restore the flow, which was cut off in May of 2024. After flow was cut off in 2024, the Colorado Department of Water Resources (CDWR) determined that Berrier Creek was a man-made ditch and not a natural flow and without water rights, could not receive any water from the West Fork of Bartlett Gulch.
BOCC proposes term limits for Ski Cooper board

The Board of County Commissioners proposed an amendment to their lease with Cooper Ski Hill that would implement term limits for the Ski Cooper board of directors during a work session on May 28. The work session was held to discuss the new master development plan (MDP), which Ski Cooper created and which BOCC must approve and send to the U.S. Forest Service.
Community dinner cancelled for 2025

The Lake County Community Fund has decided not to host its annual We Love Lake County Community Dinner in 2025. In a press release from June 2, the organization stated that it hopes to bring the event back in 2026. “After careful consideration during these unsettled times, the LCCF Board has decided to postpone this year’s gathering in favor of other meaningful ways to celebrate our common bonds,” the release stated.
Lake County enters construction contract for Housing @ 10,200

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) agreed to enter a construction contract with Solution Builders to construct the affordable housing project Housing @ 10,200 during a special meeting on May 27. Housing @ 10,200 is a project by Lake County Government to build 24 units of for-sale, deed-restricted housing. The project was originally intended to be built by Adam Berger Development but the company pulled out in December of 2024 after not being able to secure financing for the project.
