    There will be no contests for the Lake County School District Board of Education this fall. Three people have petitioned for the three positions open on the board, according to Bunny Taylor, administrative assistant to the superintendent and the board. Petitions were received from Grayson Cooper, Angel Bujanda Gutierrez and Miriam Lozano. Of the three, Lozano is currently serving on the board, having been appointed to an open position in May.

    Voters in the Lake County School District will decide on two ballot issues at the Nov. 7 election. Both include issuance of capital improvement bonds for improvements to Lake County Intermediate School, and the second also includes renovations to Federico Field located adjacent to Lake County High School. At a special meeting held Thursday, Aug. 31, the board voted unanimously to approve the wording of the ballot issues.

    It appears that a school bond issue to upgrade Lake County Intermediate School (LCIS) will not include repairing the school’s swimming pool. Sample ballot wording for a bond issue did initially include the aquatic center, but with the caveat that improvements to or construction of the aquatic center not be commenced unless a dedicated revenue stream to provide funding for its operation and maintenance is secured.

    Looking over the landscape that is Camp Hale today, it’s hard to imagine that during the seven months between April and November 1942, 1,000 buildings went up at that location to house some 16,000 troops who would train there in winter warfare. The cost of building the training facility was originally estimated at $5 million but ended up costing $31 million (about $400 million in today’s dollars).

    Lake County residents with concerns about short-term rentals will have to wait up to six months longer before the county completes its study on rental impacts and comes up with policy recommendations. On Aug. 22, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted unanimously to extend an existing one-year moratorium on short-term rental licenses until Feb. 28, 2024. As with the initial moratorium, this will apply only to those looking to obtain new short-term rental licenses.
