The Independent almost went by a different name. When the founders decided to launch a new newspaper in 1986 – the first major national paper to debut in over a hundred years – they contemplated several titles. They aimed for a name that would embody the values and journalism of their new publication, hoping to draw in readers and earn their loyalty. Some of the names they considered included Arena, The Examiner, The Nation, The Chronicle, and 24 Hours. While each had potential, none quite captured the spirit they were looking for. In the end, The Independent was chosen, leading to one of the most iconic marketing campaigns in media history, featuring the memorable slogan: “It is. Are you?”
